"WHAT IS TORCH TIGER" Comic Con Exclusive Comic is COMPLETE!!!! Alright we got just 2 weeks until Comic Con, San Diego. This year is going to be amazing! The book turned out better than I could have imagined. It's a bit thicker than last years "Who is Rocket Johnson." The stories and artwork are so inspiring. I was honored to be able to join these amazingly talented Story artists and Directors and work on something so unique and fun.

I hope you all stop by our booth #2302 and say hello! A bunch of the fine folks who made the book will be hanging out doing book signings all weekend long. I'll probably be there on friday the 24th. Stay tuned for more details. Look for our banner at the Con, you can't miss it, it has a smattering of some of the amazing artwork in the book. A word of advice...THIS IS A VERY LIMITED RUN!!! Hey guys and gals, check out the first behind the scenes look at the film I've been working on "The Princess and the Frog." These interviews show the excitement brewing inside the studio as we look to release our first hand drawn feature in a long while. Check it out for yourself! A graphic novel anthology being self-published by Walt Disney Animation Studio's Story Artists and Directors.
It's an all-ages book in which every artist answers the question: "What is Torch Tiger?"

...and this was written over 700 years before Christ was even born. On this Christmas, 2008 years after Christ birth we remember this amazing act that God did by sending his own self in the form of a man to earth to ultimately suffer and die on a cross, then defeating death by resurrecting three days later. He took the sin of the world upon himself, including yours. Don’t let this Christmas go by without giving the glory and thanks to God that he deservers.

BOLT opens today!!!

I didn't have a chance to work on this film, but it has been so encouraging to be around this studio while it has been made! Seriously I am so proud to work with and around the outstanding crew that pulled this film off. It's one of the best looking animated films I've seen and the story and animation is really great!!!! This is an exciting time for Walt Disney Animation Studios for sure!!!

Way to go Bolt Crew!!!!

-Oh and here is a cool sneak peek from John Lasseter for a new book a bunch of the guys around here helped to compile from the vast archives in the story dept. It's called "Story, the Archive Series." It is the first book in the Archive series from our Animation Research Library. If anyone is interested in Story, then you must own this book! He hints at the next Archive books to come...it's gonna be great!

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

Last night my wife and I saw a film that in all aspects blew me away. It's a little film about marriage called Fireproof. This film really got to me, I'm a big sap, I balled my eyes out, seriously I haven't done that since E.T.

It reaffirmed how important and sacred the bond of marriage between a man and woman is. One needs the other for it to survive, if one pulls out the marriage, it will break. The institution of marriage in the world is being weakened more now than ever. The covenant of marriage meant to be lasting has become temporary. It is something you can get out of easily if things get too tough. The message of fighting for your marriage is very clear in this movie. Love your spouse, make sure everyday they know it. I realize that no matter how difficult it may become at times, I need to fight for the love of my wife everyday.

If your married or seriously thinking about it or even just dating, you'll love this film! Take your girl or guy on a date and go see Fireproof!

Over the Fourth...

My wife and I took a road trip over the weekend to Southern Arizona...It was an amazing little trip. The start of the Monsoon season is really beautiful. Here are some sketches I did in various places. My supplies were a small travel watercolor set, small permanent black pen, super sized sharpee, a small permanent pentel sign pen, and a 50% Warm Grey Prismacolor pen.

It's great, my wife and I both have little watercolor sets, so when we see something cool to draw we would pull off the road and sit and draw for awhile. I'll put the link up when she posts her paintings too, there really cool!

I added some photos we took on our trip as well. I'm glad we are able to get out and see this great stuff far from Burbank. Work has been really busy lately, so it was nice to take a few days away. I came back really inspired. I know this is a bad time for road tripping, but it really is the best way to see the country. It's even better on bikes once you get there. We explored every town we set foot in, that is something you could not do in an airplane.

We had a screening of Wall.e at work this weekend. I loved it!!! An idea this special and unique only comes around every once in awhile. Don't miss it! I can't remember the last time I cared about a character as much as this, in a film. My friends up in Emeryville did an amazing job! Congrats you guys!

Sketches at Griffith Park "Travel Town"

I tried something a little different this weekend. I've learned that it's good to spend a few moments before you sketch to study what your about to draw. I always have struggled with this, I really have tried to remember what I saw, but as soon as my pencil hits the paper I start copying and making a pretty drawing instead of drawing the pose, and this takes practice to get your eye working that way.

In all these drawings, especially the electric train drawing, I did not sketch it out first, I just tried to figure it out as I went, with a pen, drawing parts and pieces as they related to the next. It was frustrating as I drew it, because my brain was telling me how off model it was turning out and to stop and start over again. I decided to keep going even if it ended up not looking anything like it at all. The result is a bit wonky, however, I realized afterword that I now have a fairly complete picture of it in my mind...I think I could draw the train from memory. In doing the drawing I actually studied it quite well, not even realizing it. I think now if I went to draw it again the results would be different, because I know where things are. Maybe the next time I wouldn't be concerned with drawing all the details as they actually are, but draw them as I now see them in my mind.

This is nothing new, just thought I'd share my thoughts on it, for me it's always helpful to see different ways to draw and study life.

Sword fighters of the land of Burbank

My wife and I went down to Verdugo Park near our house on Monday night here in Burbank. It's really great, a big group of guys and some gals dressed in armour, practice sword fighting. They do it every Monday night. There are also belly dancers who practice dancing as well. I'm not sure the name of the organization, I'll have to get the info. I've never seen guys hit each other that HARD, good thing they have the armour! The guys that practice are huge guys, and there armour makes them even more intimidating. What made us laugh was that when a guy hits another guy accidentally in the wrong spot too hard...they stop and very politely say, sorry,...then its right back into the action. It's really great to watch. Luckily I had my sketchpad with me.

If anyone is ever in the Burbank area on Monday nights it's a great drawing spot and spectacle. You can even join in, they'll teach you how. Who knows maybe I'll give it a try someday. The location is Verdugo Park, in Burbank,CA...google it. They meet by the tennis courts.

Brushes

I made some new brushes this morning based off of existing brushes already in PS, I tested them out, trying to refine them. Anyways these are some shape creature..things that I sketched out using them. These were fun to do, I just started with a weird shape, then I just slowly found where the eyes, the nose and the mouth where. It's kindof a fun excersise in design. Getting things to feel balanced is tough. I'll post more as I try new things.

I'm enjoying working on a Cintiq here at work. I've been messing around with some new brushes, but ultimately I just used a standard brush that came with photoshop for these, not to flashy, but I like the way it feels when sketching.

LA ZOO/LA LIVE STEAMERS

My wife Lisa and I live really close to Griffith Park and it's surrounding attractions. This weekend we became official members of the LA Zoo which is only a few minutes from our home. We spent some time there this weekend, it's going to be great being able to go whenever. I did a few sketches, but overall just walked around and checked the place out. We also spent sometime yesterday afternoon at LA Live Steamers which also is only a few minutes away. Live Steamers is a train club that runs miniature steam powered locomotives. It's open every Sunday...a perfect way to relax on the weekend! Also every third Sunday the crew from Walt's barn (Walt Disney's old barn he had in his backyard railroad) are on hand and the museum inside the barn is open to guests. I'm looking forward to checking out a place right next door to the Steamers called, Travel Town as well. They have a bunch of full sized steam engines parked so I can walk around them and do some drawing. I can't wait. Too many great things to do here in Burbank. We are really enjoying it so far.

Great Summer and Beyond!

Hello! Internet friends!
I'm not sure if anyone even stops by my blog anymore as of lately, I've taken a much needed break from blogging. I've been focusing much more than ever on Storyboarding. This summer I was up at Pixar doing a Story internship. It was by far the most intense, engaging, challenging, rewarding, fun, experience I have ever had in my short career so far. I made alot of great friends up there, Alex, Erik, Nicole, Pete, Ted, Mark, Rob, Nate, Brian, Adrien, the list goes on. I finished up there on the 31st of August and started work down at Disney Animation on the 4th of Sept....it was a whirlwind of a weekend let me tell you. Luckily we had 3 days instead of 2. My wife and I packed up and left our lovely home in San Luis Obispo, CA and went south to Burbank. We moved in on the hottest day of the year down here...I think it was around 107 degrees. We love our new place, we're right next to the WB studios, and I have been riding my bike to work....NO DRIVING IN TRAFFIC!!! YAH!!! We really lucked out to get to come down here. I'm loving my new job, and am meeting a whole new slew of talented people here...so many heroes, its alot to take in. So there it is, a little update for ya. I hopefully will post and comment more soon, so watch out.

We had some crazy characture wars this summer. I got it pretty hard, but hopefully I got a few people back. My buddy Erik got me the worse I think. I'm not sure but I think my eyebrows might be rather fuller than I thought. I'll have to post up a bunch in the future, they are halarious!

Horse Day

I've been wanting to post about this all week, last Saturday I spent the afternoon at a local horse clinic. A friend of ours works there and offered to let me come out and draw and study the animals. What an opportunity! One of the main characters in my short film "Hank" is a horse named "Duke." After doing some character design of him so far, I realize just how much didn't know about horses. I need to draw them so much more, there is so many subtle muscles, anyways, here is me(trying to look like a doctor) drawing our friend Jessica's horse. She put him up on a treadmill for about 45 minutes and ran him through different strides...this was fascinating to get that close to an animal moving that fast. Its amazing to see different muscles work when it moves at different speeds.

I also spent a good hour talking to Tom, he rides horses out there and knows SOOO much about cowboy stuff! He was extremely helpful. He showed me a WESTERN saddle and told me what each piece was used for. I had no idea there was so much to riding horses. My research for Duke so far has consisted of drawing horses at some local ranches here in the SLO area, and western saddles I found online, it goes to show just how important it is to do your own research. I found out from Tom that a cowboy must EARN his black hat...and this comes into play in my film.

I did a bunch of sketches but haven't had time to scan them yet, I may post a few more later, also here is some video reference I shot while the horse was on the treadmill.

Great Weekend!

I had the best weekend with my wife. She turned 25! last week so this was a continuation birthday celebration this weekend. We like to make it last around the Spears household.

On Sat. we went on a hike at Point Sal, basically it is near a military missile launch site about 40 minutes south of San Luis Obispo. The hike takes you out on these extremely high bluffs overlooking the ocean...amazing! Here is Lisa looking out.

We just hung out the rest of the day making stops and ending up at Avila Beach taking a nap under the warm sun. We topped off the evening on Sat. by going to one of our favorite places here in SLO...Sunset Drive In Theater...(Photo above is where we were sitting, the Refreshment booth was nearby as well as the projector) it was the inspiration for the setting of my film "Hank" actually. It's cool they actually still play the old commercials during intermission...CLASSIC. The Drive In is about 1 mile from our house, we grabbed a piping hot pizza and set off to the movie. We sat out under the stars on my duel foldout chair, you can get a little cozier if you know what I mean. We watched Spider Man 3, I didn't take it very seriously, but it was a fun movie. Anyways that was only Sat, but the rest was great as well. Here are a few sketches I did on Sun. afternoon at the park too. Hope you all had a good weekend!

I'm still working on my short film storyreel, I'm hopefully finishing the last scene tonight. I've really tried to set deadlines. My goal is this weekend to have all the drawings compiled. I've been building the storyreel as I go, which has probably slowed me down, but it has also been quite helpful...I can watch the action play out as I go. I think I've drawn twice as many boards as I needed and tossed out a bunch. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together.

Anyways, I am so lucky to have such a great wife. Marriage is way cool. The other night my wife Lisa and I were hangin out in her studio at Cal Poly. I had the desk behind hers. She was building a preliminary model for her Senior project, while I was storyboarding. It's coming together nicely! I'm so proud of her! Anyways it's pretty cool that we both get to work on our portfolios together. If you haven't seen her projects yet, she's posted some really cool pics from this last year on her blog, and there is more to come.

SLO International Film Fest

San Luis Obispo is hosting it's own film festival. We've had a few celebs come into town which is fun, and there has been quite a few great films shown.

Last night my wife and her brother Aaron (who is visiting us from Sacramento this weekend) and I all went to see a couple Surf films. Step Into Liquid, and Chasing Dora. Step Into Liquid was so EPIC on the big screen, I've meantioned it before but in downtown SLO there is an old theater called the Freemont...it's one of the coolest spots to see a film(Big Screen, Big Sound, and Cool Neon Lights with an old ticket booth.) Both films (for all you surf buffs out there) were directed by the kin of Bruce Brown (the guys behind the legendary Endless Summer films) Wes, and Dana Brown. Bruce was at the screening along with Robert "Wingnut" Weaver. We had a chance to meet the guys afterwords...very cool!!! You can check out a few more pixs from last night on my wife Lisa's blog. My wife (the greatest part of my life!) met me for lunch this afternoon at a great little park near the historic downtown here in SLO. She brought me one of my favorite meals from a local burger place. The weather was in the high 70's, which was wonderful! I can't wait to wear shorts again. I managed to get a few sketches in during lunch. There was a girl who was doing acrobatics hanging from a tree, just thought I'd clarify a couple of my drawings...it was really interesting to watch.

Here are some Squirrel designs I worked up over lunch. This is my next project. It is a story about a Mom and her Son and they are both squirrels. Sounds exciting huh? Anyways, this last weekend I finished my first pass story reel, it is at 3:31 seconds long right now, but I plan on getting that down a bit. I'm happy with the idea this far. This squirrel is supposed to be really cute and very little. I'm trying to really simplify the shape of the character, I'll keep working on it. Any input would be helpful.

I drew this car over my lunch break. It is my neighbor's car and everyday I walk past it and say to myself..."I gotta draw this!" I'm lucky enough to work within about 5 blocks of my home here in SLO. I really have got to do more of these, not my strongsuit. Oh, and Blogger just made me officially switchover...I was ticked off, hopefully it won't screw-up my blog in anyway.

I just was messin around with some classroom kid ideas. This was a great excercise, I quickly did a sketch and then assigned a name and a bit of backstory...I feel like I know these kids already. Seriously....there was a Melvin in every class I ever had in grade school. There was always that guy who was light years ahead of everyone in the facial hair dept...man I wanted to be him! Grade school was the best.

Sno Pet revamped

Just thought I'd post this revamped Sno-Pet idea. I think it works better, thanks to all who gave suggestions. I still really like Dave James' idea of a little sparrow ice-skating on top of the bowl...pure genius! Snow Stories...Story

So I've been promising I would divulge a little of my story, so hear goes...this is a teaser.

I've been keeping sooo busy lately with this stuff, I hope to have a few good drawings by the time I'm done. It is so tuff doing artwork of my own with a 40 work week too, I know boo hoo. Anyways, I'm aiming to finish Snow Stories by the end of this week (for now). Expect a post of a few more storyboards soon.

Saturday is for PLAYING!

Lisa and I just got ourselves a zippy new digital camera for Christmas, it has really good resolution. We had a great day today about 11 miles from our doorstep in a little place called Montana del Oro State Park ( I hope I'm spelling that right). It is beautiful there, and today the waves were very angry, I think about 12-15 feet the newspaper said, I wouldn't want to go out in them thats for sure. Anyways, we feel pretty fortunate to be living up here in Central California by the sea. We went jumping on the sand dunes( I kept trying to take a photo of Lisa in the air, but I kept missing-darn! anyways she got a pretty good one of me airborn), then climbed Valencia Peak, it is a mountain right by the shore, about a 2 mile hike, 1373' in elevation. The hike reminds me of scenes from Lord of the Rings, the trail follows the top of the mountain side so you look down to your left and your right and can see for miles...it's amazing! Anyways, just thought I'd share some photos of where we live, God is good!!!

I'm back, Happy 2007 everyone! I had a great time with family and friends this Christmas, lots of time to relax, it was great! Now I'm about to get really busy, aside from my full time job, I have been working on a few projects for my portfolio, Snow Stories...etc... anyways, I have a ton of work to do still. I have two other short films that I'm doing storyboards for and I still am trying to finish up work on SS. I had a blast doing the Snow stuff-I'll probably do another post of a few things, and I will post about my other projects soon too. Meanwhile, here are some sketches of a few family members I did while home, Lisa, her Mom and Pop, and my younger brother Kyler ...oh and the guy with the mustache is made up, I wish my uncle looked like that.

Bill Peet's Countdown to Christmas

I love how Peet's stories are always so emotional, this one doesn't dissapoint. Other favorites of mine are The Wingdingdilly, and The Wump World.

These are a few sketches I did while watching "It's a Wonderul Life" the other night. That film is probably my 2nd favorite film of all time...next to Jurassic Park. I'm amazed at how I feel for George throughout the entire picture, not many films can do what that film does with your emotions.

Sno-Transportation 1

These snowpeople have to get around somehow, they use no running motors (of any metal kind anyways- I will explain later). So an animal pulled, sleigh type car, is an appropriate way of travel.

Sno-deling...(Sno-yodeling)

So I'm part Scandinavian, and my Grandpa is pure Scandinavian...and boy can he yodel, I'm telling you. As I was growing up I was fascinated by him, and I wanted to learn...so I'm happy to tell you, that I can yodel a bit myself now. Parking garages have really great acoustics. It is actually one of my lifes goals to yodel in the Alps, hopefully someday soon. But for now I can only draw that, I know this snow-world wouldn't be complete with out a yodeling Snowman.

Frozen Food Store

So when I came to think about what my snow characters would most likely eat, I thought of sno-cones, ice cream...yah yah yah, but, I know they needed something more than that...and thats when it hit me, of course...if I were a snowman I would eat FROZEN FOODS.

Frozen foods don't all come in small microwavable boxes you know. Think about that!

Tonight was great, these past couple weeks have been quite hecktic, my wife has been busy on our new computer finishing her 80!!! page book for part of her Senior project in Architecture (which is amazing by the way and I'm so proud) and as for me aside from work, and my snow project, I've been working on the set design for our Christmas Program happening sat and sun this weekend here in SLO at our church. The small group of us set designers finally finished it and lit it up tonight...and I have to say it is quite nice...it's a starry sky with sand dunes etc... Anyways I've all but tired myself out, I had a bit of a tantrum last night because I wasn't getting enought time to work on my Snow project (whaaa-whaaa) I just know I could get so much more artwork done, anyways I'm very releaved that the set is done. Tonight we also had my wife's architecture firm's work Christmas party...that was great, its so fun to see my wife work at such a cool place and do so well...

I have to say though, I wish I had my sketchbook with me, I had to be a good husband and tune in...some of you know how that goes. The office she works at is seriously full of characters, if I worked there I really don't think I'd be able to concentrate. There was this one guy with these dark rim glasses and suspenders, not to meantion a little point at the top of his hair in the front...I had to draw him once I got home. The sketches in the upper right corner are all I could remember of him. There were others as well...maybe the next work party I'll sneek in a sketchbook. The rest of these drawings are from the life magazine in our newspaper, I just felt like drawing something tonight and it was all that was handy. Wow this blog post is long and it is sooo late, it just feels good to be a bit freed up.

I've been reworking the sno-people designs, I decided to streamline the body to a tear drop shape. I figured the simpler the better if these guys were to get animated. Plus I don't really care for the 3 snowball look as much any more.

This is just a generic sno-man, I'll hopefully post some of the main characters soon...besides the evil sno-villian.

I'm having a blast with this, hope you guys enjoy...and please any constructive criticism is welcome.

I had a great drawing night tonight, my wife and I went to a coffee shop while she did homework, I worked on my snowmen, and got a great line up for a couple hours straight of anxious coffee purchasers as well. This is a page of some more snow characters, I put some quick color to them. I'm playing with sizes etc...trying to get a feel for a certain style and look. Please give me feedback as I go with these, it would be very helpful!

Merry Christmas!

Alright, well I've decided to start getting into the Christmas mood a little early. From now until Christmas I've decided that I will work on an idea that I have had rolling around in my head for a couple years now, but haven't spent a ton of time developing it. So, just as I did last year with my Santa character designs during Christmas, I've decided to work on my "SNO" idea.

Pretty much, my posts will consist of Snomen...character design, gags, storyboards, maybe some color studies...who knows. This is my challenge to myself to get some work done on it. I probably won't get into the details of the story, just because I don't want to give too much away. I'm excited to have a little project to be working on over the holiday season. Here is a few drawings I did for starters...we'll see where I go with these.

I welcome any feedback, hopefully I won't get too busy, I want to get as far as I can before the BIG day!

Hey guys, I wanted to let everyone know about an awesome new blog you must check out, Mr. Mike Dietz! He is one of the talented guys behind the GREATEST VIDEO GAME EVER MADE...(Yes I make that claim)

EARTHWORM JIM!!!!

This is a drawing Mike gave me a couple years ago, it's original....just thought I'd make you all jealous,...oh yah!!!

Earthworm Jim is an amazing game, full of animated goodness from Doug Tennapel and a slew of talented folks, one of those was Mike. They went on to do another one of the greatest games ever...The Neverhood. I've posted a clip from the game(actually Skullmonkeys-the sequal to Neverhood.) This one is animated by Doug.

Anyways Mike is a great guy and a friend of mine, his artwork and animation along with Doug's inspired me when I was a weee lad to learn about animation. So I'm really excited to pass on the word of his new blog, there is a bunch of artwork from the games and his sketchbook (which is amazing) So check it out! I'm sure there will be much more goodness to come! Blogging is sooo coool! Thanks Mike!

Oh and one more thing, I'm not sure if I can say anything, but Mike is still quite busy working as an Animation Director for Video Games....specifically certain future games having to do with a major feature animation studio...it ryhmes with "FLIXAR." Those guys got the right man for the job!

Sketchclub, Pixar Story Event!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys and gals, I had one of the coolest weekends this last weekend. Why tell you about it, when I can show you about it.

My wife Lisa and I took a short drive down to Los Angeles last Friday morning. It was a fun weekend with my wife, a little getaway.

First up on the trip was meeting up with some of the best artists in the animation world for lunch and sketchin...Marcelo Vignali, Marcos Mateu, Armand Serrano, and Noelle Triaureau. They are all working on "Surf's Up" for Sony Feature Animation. They were gracious enough to have me join them for their "Sketchclub" The links to their individual blogs and the "Sketchclub blog" is to the right in my links list, so check out all of our memory drawings from Fri. Thanks so much you guys for letting me tag along! I enjoyed it so much.

Next up we went to my old stomping grounds in Long Beach, CA. We had dinner at our favorite resturant in Seal Beach called "Taco Surf"....AMAZING MEXICAN FOOD. It was a beatiful night. The Bay theater is an old theater in Seal that shows well...old movies, some great films played their while I was in school, "Citizen Kane,"" Raiders of the Lost Ark,"" Jaws," and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," I miss it. We also stopped in at the Art Dept. I used to work at during the summers in LB and saw some old friends. What a great day.

Next up was the Screenwriters Expo, featuring a slew of the fine folks from Pixar Animation Studios on Sat. Basically I stayed inside the room all day, and had I think the best seat in the house, I wasn't about to give it up. It was a cool atmosphere, basically the guys just hung around all day in the auditorium. Kevin Koch over at TagBlog took way better notes than I did, and you can read them at this link

This conference was extremely helpful to me considering I'm working away on my story portfolio right now, trying to learn as much as I can. I hadn't seen some of these guys in person, so it was a real treat to finally hear them speak. Here are a few Photos from the day...

This first photo is the Andrew Stanton Keynote, I was lucky to get in the room for the first one of the day, that is why I'm so far back.

Next up was the panel of Directors and Writers moderated by Mr. Stanton, this was very insightful considering all the projects they are working on. As you can see I'm a bit closer to the stage now. Front Row Baby! No Photo of this panel, sorry

This photo is from the Story Artists panel, Mark Andrews, Jason Katz, RDCarmen,and Jim Capobianco. SWEEET!!! I have learned alot from these guys, seriously.

The event of the day was Brad Bird and Mark Andrews, this was really funny.

Last up, I had the chance to meet a few of my heroes during the breaks. These were some of the highlight photo ops.

Mr. Nick Park
Gosh he is a really nice guy, I was stoked to meet him. He was sitting in the next row over about 6 seats away from me, so I couldn't resist introducing myself. I'm just crackers about Nick Park.

Gary Rydstrom
This was perhaps one of the best highlight of the night, I MET GARY RYDSTROM!!! Ok, so Jurassic Park was a monumental film for me, as it was for many of you guys my age. I remember talking my parents into getting a home theater system just so I could play that movie LOUD. Gary is basically behind all the really great sound design in the past 20 years, so it was huge to meet one of my heroes. It was kindof funny because I was just standing there and Peter De Seve walked up, and they both talked about a foot away, so I didn't want to interupt, but finally I had my chance, he is a really nice guy and really funny as well, I think his short film Lifted will be great...and his feature film???!!!!.

Alright enough is enough, just thought I'd share these with anyone who cares. It was a great weekend. Thanks Marcelo(and the sketchclub gang), Pixar, and My Wife! oh and Mark Andrews. See ya

I haven't really posted much from when I went to Cal State Long Beach. Last night I scanned a few life drawings I did during my senior year in a costume figure drawing class, I'm posting them as a reminder for me to work harder. Robin (my professor) maybe you'll see this post, and that is ok, I realized towards the end of college just how important it is to draw people ALOT!!!... Boy, I was an idiot. I realize now how far I have to go. So it is a reminder of that.

I went POSSUM hunting and I caught one!!! This is quite exciting...don't be decieved by that adorable cuddly face, behind those eyes is a terrifyingly horrible creature. I have literally been after this guy for like 3 months, he has been so illusive. Basically he and possibly his brothers or sisters have found a way under our house, and not just under, they have found a way into the attic. I have racked my brain night after night, I even climbed into the attic to try to get him...needless to say, my long search is hopefully over, I reset the trap last night with COCO PUFFS this time, just incase there is one more not sure if they like cereal as much as cat food. I have my fingers crossed!!!

So Jurassic Park is my all time favorite movie...I know I share that same feeling with some people. I saw that film when I was, I think 12 years old. I remember making flipbooks of TREX's eating things and walking and roaring, gosh I think dino's were all I really drew for a couple years straight. Then came Earthworm Jim...thats when I got back into animation.

I haven't drawn any creatures or dinos in a little while, this is a page from my sketchbook last night once again at barnes and nobles, I guess my mind wondered from the people I was sketching. I put a bit of color in them in Photoshop, I really like the Prisma pen look...it's funny I have a 72 pen set at home but the computer still wins out alot of the time. Ok enough rambling.

My Wife's Watercolors

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you all a heads up about my wife Lisa's blog. She has posted some really great artwork from are trip to Arizona, you really must check it out! She is a really great watercolorist! We both have small travel watercolor sets, and it is so fun to stop and paint with her wherever we go. She also is preparing for her last year in the Architecture Program here at Poly, (going on 7 years!!!!) so she is gathering inspiration and working on her final building design...no doubt over the next year she will post some really cool things. Frog Pop

When I was 16 years old I made this animated film. This was my first finished film. It was a really big moment in my life...I actually got to THE END on a project. This film although very crude and simple is very special to me, it actually got me my first storyboard job. I worked at a company in Sacramento, CA for a couple years as a storyboard artist for some fun CG kids videos. Anyways, it proved to me when I showed it to a large audience that I could make an audience react to something I wanted them to react to, they actually laughed at the right moment! I knew this is what I wanted to do for my career, I have been working toward that goal, and one of these days soon, I'll let you guys in on my little project X I'm working on. But for now watch Frog Pop...oh and stay for the credits.

This was filmed with my really super cool SUPER8MM camera with still frame and fade capabilities...a rare find!

Well everyone, I'm off to beautiful HOT Arizona on Vacation! My wife and I are taking our first road trip...it is going to be awesome!!! We are spending 2 nights camping on the south rim of the Grand Canyon! and 2 Nights camping in Zion, we will stop at other places as we go. I'm bringing my art supplies, hopefully to do some landscape drawings paintings, I can't wait to see all the color. Hopefully Lisa and I don't melt.

Cars Date!

My wife Lisa and I went last friday to CARS!!! We had a great date, we hopped on our bicycles( I know not a car) and went to an old drive up burger place close to where we live, ate a delicious meal, then with much eagerness and excitement went to the movie theater. The Freemont Theater to be exact! It is an old historic theater here in San Luis Obispo, CA. The theater, screen, and sound are big so it was a real treat that Cars was playing there. I feel that a movie should be an experience when you go to it, after all filmakers like the ones that made Cars want it to be just that! So heres to all the hard working folk at Pixar for doing a great job. This film was way cool, and I had a blast enjoying it with my wife!!!

Bird Blog

I've wanted to do some artwork like this for awhile, just for giggles, I've seen some really great nature drawings in the past, and I wanted to take a swing at it. I used a brush pen, then photoshop. Birds are so fascinating, I got inspired the other night to draw birds while looking at one of my Bill Peet books...he draws GREAT little birds! So maybe there will be more to come.

Here is some roughs from a new book project I'm working on at work. I really tried to CUUUTIZE (if thats even a word) the teddy bear as much as possible. I'm listening to a mixture between Edward Scissorhands, Batman 1 and Incredibles as I draw these right now. Later-

Extraordinary Larry is back!

Here is a spread from my book "Extraordinary Larry" I posted a few more spreads on my very first blog post back in August of 05' I had just finished the book. This is one of my favorite adventures Larry goes on in the book. I believe the final had a bit more green in it. But I think I like this version better. I really enjoyed working on "Larry"

Weds. Night Sketch Downtown

My wife had girls night last night, so I had a night all alone out on the town, I ate at one of my favorite spots, Firestone Grill. They have a big outdoor eating area, so I could easily capture many different people at many different angles. The lone man in the black frame, I especially liked, I have been(when sketching) trying to think of Walt Stanchfields notes, and the whole bit about if you can capture a gesture in 5 lines, why do it in 50?(something like that) Anyways I thought I kindof got this guys gesture with reletively few lines, every once in awhile one drawing comes along, that I go, "mmmhhh...alright maybe I'm starting to get this concept." Also, this little bird gave me a idea for a story he was so hungry, he just stood by my table the whole time.
